Back in 'the old days' when I used to write for Cheap Eats, the benchmark was dinner at under $50 for two people. I recall being sent to a few places which as they gained in popularity quickly rose out of this price range and I had wondered whether this was due in part to the popularity of The Cheap Eats Guide.

Invariably the eats are cheap where the rent is cheap and they have family staffing the venue. The burbs are where it's at.

In the inner city it is becoming increasingly hard to dine really cheaply in the evening, unless you fancy one of those Hong Kong style fast turnover venues along Swanston Street.

Even in - the once dirt cheap - Victoria Street, Richmond, unless you confine yourself to a dish of noodles each, the prices of meals are getting toward mid range.
